Legal aid is designed to allow access to justice for those who would otherwise be unable to afford the costs involved with instructing a Lawyer or Solicitor. It can cover a wide area of subject matters such as family law, divorce, compensation claims, wills, powers of attorney, guardianship orders, separation, child contact and residence disputes, interdicts, eviction and rent arrears actions, children’s referral cases as well as criminal work and other matters.
The rules for financial eligibility for legal aid vary depending upon the type of case for which you are applying for legal aid and your eligibility will be assessed based upon the level of your income as well as any savings or other capital you may hold.
